When you're sick

An illness is "a condition of being unhealthy in your body or mind"-http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/illness

The most common illnesses according to http://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/821613/5-common-illnesses-and-how-to-beat-them is:
  1. Common cold
  2. Influenza/ flu
  3. Respiratory Syncytial Virus
  4. Foodborne illness e.g. norovirus and salmonella
  5. Strep throat
Mostly what you should do to prevent sickness is to wash your hands! This is because you may have touched a contaminated surface.
http://www.ewashtenaw.org/government/departments/public_health/ph_portal/infectious_disease.html

What food do you eat when you are sick?
    • Soup: This thins mucus, keeps nasal passages moist.
    • Tea: Helps with congestion and sore throats.
    • Citrus Fruits: Boost immune systems.
    • Ice Pops: Dehydrating and lessens congestion .
    • Spicy Foods: Helps with congestion.
Where do these food come from?

Soup is the second oldest cooking method in the world(around 5000 B.C.) The word meaning comes from a French word 'sope/soupe'. Even though soup has been around for a very long time, it changes from country to country e.g. Posole, a Mexican soup, Peanut and Squash soup, African
Like most things, tea originated in China as a medical drink.
Ice pops was bought by a woman in New York after a 11 year old boy discovering it.
Counties like Mexico, India, Korea and Bhutan all eat spicy food.

Facts about being sick!- cause why not
    • The temperature of water has no affect with bacteria, more with good scrubbing.
    • Sluggish Cognitive Tempo Disorder is just a fancy name meaning laziness- thought I would add this is, as many people are.
    • Each season, 35 to 50 Americans get the flu.
    • People get more sick from being indoors than cold weather- in fact not even by cold weather.
    • Laughing keeps your immune system healthy, so smile more.

    Weather Forecast

Since I had to walk home in the lashing rain, I thought I'd write a blog on weather in Ireland.

Weather is 'the state or condition of the atmosphere, with reference to temperature, precipitation and wind speed etc. The weather is studied by meteorologists. Elements of weather include rain, sun, fog, frost and cloud.'- http://www.ask.com/question/what-is-the-definition-of-weather

    http://www.econet.org.uk/weather/world.html

Weather is different in different places around the world because of low pressure and high pressure system. Low pressure makes rain and snow, while high pressure areas is sunny, warm weather.

Precipitation, rain as I was telling you I had to walk home in, is just one form of precipitation, others would include snow, sleet and hail. Rain occurs when water vapour condenses around dust particles, creating clouds. When clouds get heavy they let the water fall.

This is a fun website to get information about weather: http://education.nationalgeographic.com/education/mapping/interactive-map/?ls=802007&f=7b1&t=1&lg=10&b=3&bbox=163.75924%2C-64.28773%2C137.04049%2C69.92637

    Fun facts:
    • The highest temperature in the Antarctica(driest continent)  at 14.6 °C (59 °F) recorded on January 5, 1974. but the highest temperature in the world is 56.7°C (134°F) in California, July 10,1913.
    • Rain falls on other planets, but its not exactly are nice water droplets e.g. on Venus it rains sulphuric acid (but never touches surfaces due to intense heat)
    • A rainbow is actually a full circle of light but since we only view them from the ground its just semi circle- looks like there no gold at the end of a rainbow
Lets end with a cool question everyone wonders: What is the temperature if it's zero degrees today but it be double this tomorrow?
Well, according to http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/58415.html you  need to use a  Kelvin scale, we use a formula to put it  into this  to get a solid number K = C + 273.15 (K=kelvin, C= Celsius) and we get that the temperature is 273.15 degrees when its doubled.

    DIY

     -DollFaceRee.

    Hi bloggers,
Okay so spring/summer fashion is on now, so why not make something for yourself. This link  is a DIY for a tie dye t-shirt - a popular trend  for summer. Tie  dye is random twisting, folding then put into dye- How fun!!

Lets make it geography related by seeing how it got to being this t-shirt.

    1. Cotton plant is produced,  bolls of this plant burst releasing white fibres, these are picked, cleaned and removed of their seeds. The fibres collected, are combed and spun into thread or yarn. This is then used to make are cotton material (oh junior cert knowledge!)
    2. Then coal, that makes your electricity to power your sewing machine that makes your t-shirt.
      http://www.nigelhallmenswear.com/item/Basil/Plain-fitted-t-shirt-Basil/63Z
    Fun facts:
    • Tshirts were used for the first time by miners in 1800s because of the hot environment- how convenient.
    • It takes six miles of yarn to make one t-shirt
    • Wizard of Oz was the first to use a t-shirt as a promotion for their movie.
    • Over 2 billion t-shirt are sold each year- Now that's a lot.
    • Tie dye was used by American Youth who rebelled against the conservative rules.

    The world of eyes.

Eyes is the organ of sight, they provide vision and send signals to others (anger, love, lust etc.) Wherever there is light and a reason to move, animals will have eyes.
    http://www.biography.com/people/groups/irish-eyes/photos/irish-eyes

The first thing we notice when we look into someone eyes, is the iris or colour. Most common colours are blue, hazel, grey and brown. Less common ones are amber, violet, red, black and surprisingly green. The pigment that causes these colours in your eyes is called melanin. (This also causes hair and skin colour). Brown eyed people have more melanin in their eyes than blue, the more melanin you have, the darker the colour. The genetics found in your eye colour according to
http://www.aboutfloaters.com/how-eye-color-develops.htm are  bey 1 and bey 2 found on  chromosome 15, these have the colour blue and brown present and gey gene on chromosome 19, have the colour blue and green alleles.
Where in the world is my eye colour found ? You may be asking. Well according to http://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/eye-colors-1410.html
Brown eyed people are the most common type of eyes so there is no exact spot.
People with hazel eyes are commonly found in America and Europe.
Blue eyes, well although these colour eyes are common they are especially found in countries such as Germany, Netherlands, Iceland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Estonia.
Grey eyes are often found in Russia, Finland and Baltic States, whereas to Southern Asia.

               Fun facts about eye colour!
    • Green eyes are less common in humans and more common in animals- they are also known as "cats eyes"
    • The increase in the exposure of light makes your eye change colour. That's why when you're born your eyes are blue.
    • According to http://list25.com/25-crazy-facts-about-your-eyes/ the first blue eyes lived 6,000-10,000 years ago.
    • Heterochromia (born with 2 different coloured eyes) this occurs because different amounts of melanin in the eye or by a trauma at birth (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-does-someone-get-two/)
    • Asian, Hispanic, or African children are usually born with brown eyes. They will stay this colour for the remainder of their life
